What Kind of
Church is This?

An Independent Christian Church

We are a body of believers subject to Christ as Head, the Word of God as authority, and no other governing body. We are formed out of the Restoration Movement as Christians holding to the New Testament model of church polity.

A Disciple-Making Church

Everything we do seeks to empower and equip every member to share Jesus in their day-to-day lives. We pray that every person shares the life-changing hope of Jesus in new conversations daily. Our goal is that each person can say, “I am compelled and empowered to lead others to find and follow Jesus.”

An Intergenerational Church

We are a church that does not divide the body for worship by age. We believe parents are called to be the disciple makers in their family and strive not to usurp them in that role.

FAQ

What is an Independent Christian Church?

We belong to no convention, conference, synod or diocese. We hold the Bible as God's Word and our final rule in faith and practice.

The Restoration movement was started by frontier Christians who sought to set aside denominational labels, political ties and creeds and to come together as “Christians Only.” The foundations of this movement would be based upon three primary principles:

  • The Unity of all Christians

  • The Authority of the Bible

  • The Love of Christ in His Church

A slogan that helped define these Christians was:
“In matters of faith, we will stand united; in matters of opinion, we will exercise liberty; and in all things we will seek to exemplify the love of Jesus Christ.”

What does it mean to be a 'disciple-making church'?

We want every believer to own their faith. Further, we want to equip individuals to invite others to trust in Jesus and replicate the faith they have in the lives of those they disciple.

We want mature men and women to help younger men and women in the faith (Titus 2:1-8). This is achieved through life-on-life discipleship groups.

We want total participation, where every believer is using their spiritual gifting to the benefit of those to whom God has knit us together.

Why are kids in worship service?

The philosophy of Oikos is that children are a not a distraction. They are part of the community of faith. Increasingly, families are being separated by an ever growing list of activities. There are few, if any, times for the family to come together to express their faith. The opportunities for children to see parents living an expression of their faith in the public arena are quickly shrinking.

We believe families are best served by parents owning and replicating their own faith in their children.

What is Baptism?

Baptism is the immersion of a believer uniting us with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus (Rom. 6:3-8). The Bible teaches that baptism is a part of the decision to follow Jesus (Acts 8:12).

Everyone who decides to follow Jesus should believe, confess (Rom. 10:9-10), repent, and be baptized for the remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38).

What is Communion?

Communion, or the Lord's Supper, is the participation of the church in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus instituted this meal of remembrance on the night he was crucified, inviting those who believe to take the bread and the cup representing the body and blood of Christ.

Communion is open to all baptized believers whether a member of this body or not.

What is membership?

To become a member at Oikos we ask that you attend an Oikos 101 class or discuss it with an elder or minister for more information.
